Marriott International Headquarters Development Site

September 4, 2019

This morning around 9:30 a.m., a utility subcontractor on the 7700 block of Woodmont Avenue, near Woodmont Grill and adjacent to the development site, accidentally struck an inactive and undocumented 1” water line while excavating the area. This water line was attached to an active 6” water main, and when struck, broke the water main and flooded the surrounding area.

The incident, while not due to negligence, caused significant flooding to the area. Some surrounding buildings experienced low water pressure with temporary service interruption to nearby businesses. WSSC responded promptly and worked tirelessly with the development team to identify and shut off the valves serving the water main.

This afternoon, utility service to the area was fully restored. Crews will be assessing any damage caused by the flooding and make necessary repairs. Normal operations and traffic control plans are expected to resume tomorrow.
