Development Update: Week of June 17, 2019

June 14th, 2019

Marriott International Headquarters

Week of June 17, 2019:

Underground utility improvements and restoration work continue along Woodmont Avenue. The majority of the work along Woodmont Avenue will be completed in July, followed by work starting along Norfolk Avenue toward Wisconsin Avenue. This work will mainly be performed during nighttime hours to minimize impact to the neighboring businesses, traffic patterns, and pedestrian access, with occasional daytime work as necessary. Meanwhile, it is anticipated that the mass excavation and hauling operations along Wisconsin Avenue will be completed in July.

The installation of tower cranes is scheduled for the weekend of June 21. During this time, southbound vehicular and pedestrian traffic patterns along Wisconsin Avenue will be affected, however, they will be closely monitored and carefully controlled by the general contractor in accordance with the approved traffic control plans. Throughout the next week, there will also be a noticeable increase in concrete operations and other activities on the construction site. Over the next several weeks as these activities ramp up, this will likely require limited detours of pedestrian access along Woodmont Avenue.

Throughout this project, the approved Montgomery County and State Highway traffic control plans will ensure minimal impact to traffic flow around the construction site. At all times, two-way traffic will be maintained as reasonably as possible. The timeline for all upcoming phases of the utility work is estimated in this site plan. Please note, this plan does not include anticipated work performed by Pepco.

Sidewalk closures remain in place along sections of Woodmont, Norfolk and Wisconsin Avenues (view map of closures here). As additional temporary closures may be necessary, pedestrians will be detoured to the east sidewalk of Wisconsin Avenue using nearby crosswalks as needed for their safety. We ask pedestrians to please be vigilant, pay close attention, and follow the guidance of the signage for any detours that may be necessary. Our number one priority is the safety and security of pedestrians and commuters around the construction site.

On Friday, shortly after our most recent development update was published, emergency responders were called to the construction site when a worker suffered a non-life-threatening injury. The worker is safe and we applaud the response of emergency personnel and on-site development team members who supported the response. See more from Bethesda Magazine.

Monthly construction updates

The developers and general contractor are committed to an open dialog with the community and they hold bimonthly construction updates for the general public. These updates are generally scheduled for the first Tuesday of every other month and take place in downtown Bethesda at the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center located at 4805 Edgemoor Lane, Bethesda, MD 20814. The next update will take place Tuesday, August 6, 2019, at 6:00 p.m.
