Week of September 9, 2019
On Wednesday morning, September 4, 2019, around 9:30 a.m., a utility subcontractor on Woodmont Avenue, near Woodmont Grill and adjacent to the development site, accidentally struck an inactive and undocumented water line while excavating the area, which broke the water main it was attached to, flooding the surrounding area. The incident, due to this unforeseen condition, caused some surrounding buildings and businesses to experience low water pressure and temporary service interruption. The Development Team and WSSC responded promptly to identify and resolve the issue. At around 4:00 p.m., water service to the area was fully restored and repairs to the roadways were completed the following day. Further utility work along Woodmont Avenue is being reviewed and will not continue until the week of September 9.
Along Wisconsin Avenue, underground utility work will continue and is anticipated to be complete this November. This work is being performed primarily during nighttime hours to ensure traffic runs smoothly during the day. Related road restoration work is being performed during daytime hours. A timeline for each phase of the underground utility work is estimated in this site plan.
Meanwhile, material deliveries are increasing as concrete operations will continue through 2020. Large concrete placements are scheduled for Tuesday, Thursday and Friday of this week during early morning hours beginning at 5:30 a.m. Performing these large concrete placements during cooler hours allows work to continue during hot summer months, particularly when large numbers of trucks are required to complete the work, and where rapidly rising temperatures can affect the ideal physical properties for pouring concrete.
There is a water outage scheduled for Wednesday, September 11, starting at 9:00 p.m. and ending at 5:00 a.m. This outage will allow for the installment of water tie-ins for the new lines that are being installed on Woodmont Avenue.
Throughout this project, the approved Montgomery County and State Highway traffic control plans will ensure minimal impact to traffic flow around the construction site. Meanwhile, sidewalk closures remain in place along sections of Woodmont, Norfolk and Wisconsin Avenues (view map of closures here).
During this time, please be vigilant and pay close attention to detour signs and flagging operators as they direct traffic to minimize disruptions. Failure to follow these directions may result in a citation from local law enforcement. Our number one priority is the safety and security of commuters and pedestrians around the construction site.
Monthly construction updates
The development team is committed to an open dialog with the community and holds bimonthly construction updates open to the general public. These updates are generally scheduled for the first Tuesday of every other month and take place in downtown Bethesda at the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center located at 4805 Edgemoor Lane, Bethesda, MD 20814.
