Development Update: Week of August 19, 2019

Week of August 16, 2019

The final phase of mass excavation and hauling operations is nearly complete. Last weekend, a temporary crane was installed to remove the remaining heavy excavation equipment from the project site. This work was completed on schedule the crane has now been removed.

Underground utility work along Woodmont continues with related work along Norfolk Avenue nearly completed. Along Wisconsin Avenue, underground utility work continues and will be ongoing through November of this year. This work is being performed primarily during nighttime hours to ensure traffic runs smoothly during the day. Related road restoration work is being performed during daytime hours. A timeline for each phase of the underground utility work is estimated in this site plan.

Meanwhile, material deliveries are increasing as concrete operations continue through 2020. Occasional large concrete placements may occur only once or twice per week during early morning hours. The next early morning concrete placements are scheduled for Tuesday through Friday, August 20-23, beginning at 5:30 a.m. Performing these large concrete placements during cooler hours allows work to continue during hot summer months, particularly when large numbers of trucks are required to complete the work, and where rapidly rising temperatures can affect the ideal physical properties for pouring concrete.

The development team wants to acknowledge potential upcoming underground utility work, unrelated to the Marriott International Headquarters development site, which may be performed by WSSC and/or their contractors near the intersection of Old Georgetown Road and Woodmont Avenue. Throughout this project, the approved Montgomery County and State Highway traffic control plans will ensure minimal impact to traffic flow around the construction site. Meanwhile, sidewalk closures remain in place along sections of Woodmont, Norfolk and Wisconsin Avenues (view map of closures here).

During this time, please be vigilant and pay close attention to detour signs and flagging operators as they direct traffic to minimize disruptions. Failure to follow these directions may result in a citation from local law enforcement. Our number one priority is the safety and security of commuters and pedestrians around the construction site.

Monthly construction updates

The development team is committed to an open dialog with the community and holds bimonthly construction updates open to the general public. These updates are generally scheduled for the first Tuesday of every other month and take place in downtown Bethesda at the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center located at 4805 Edgemoor Lane, Bethesda, MD 20814.
