1,500 Marriott Associates Take Spirit to Serve into Montgomery County

While volunteering in the local communities is a year-round commitment for Marriott International, Spirit to Serve Our Communities Day (STSOC Day) is the company’s global day of service that aims to make lasting impacts on the social, economic, and environmental wellbeing of the communities in which Marriott does business.

This year, which marked the 20th anniversary of STSOC Day, saw record-breaking impact throughout the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia (DMV). In Montgomery County alone, more than 1,500 Marriott associates supported 30 individual projects, including projects at Marriott’s corporate headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland.

Here are just a few highlights from Marriott’s STSOC Day:

  • Preserved 12 public parks throughout Virginia and Maryland by removing invasive plant species, maintaining nature trails, and removing trash and waste from the park grounds.
  • Joined the fight against hunger and food insecurity by assembling 2,000 bags of trail mix for Martha’s Table; serving lunch to constituents at Shepherds Table, DC Central Kitchen, and So Others Might Eat; and, sorting food items at Manna Food Center, Capital Area Food Bank, Food for Others, and Food & Friends.
  • Built a playground with KaBOOM! at Park Montgomery, transforming an empty site in Silver Spring, Maryland, into a state-of-the-art playground; the 12th playground Marriott volunteers and KaBOOM! have partnered to build.
